Despite waking rather early, I managed to snooze in (which was delightful) and didn't begin my first day of exploration until leaving the house around 11:30am! My friend E lives in a hill in Dunedin, and this shouldn't be surprising in any way shape or form, as most of Dunedin is on a hill! Very hilly city - it's lovely! Walking down the hill to the city was rather bone jarring because it's very steep, but it allowed for BEAUTIFUL views across central Dunedin across South Dunedin, to the Southern Ocean.
Such a beautiful walk down to the city!
First stop was the Anglican Cathedral (St Pauls) on one of the sides of the heart of the city: the Octagon.
Quite the impressive building on the outside, it appears that it's been added onto at the back at some point after the rest of the cathedral was built. ( which is right St Paul's Cathedral, Dunedin ) It's lovely inside:
and just as lovely outside!
After that, I went off to find somewhere to grab a data SIM, so I had some sort of net access whilst I was here. (I'm going walking in the hills next week - this is the *plan*... - and the chance of me getting somewhat lost is rather high! I'd rather be able to tweet "help!" or look up Gmaps than not!) Telecom NZ sorted me out, but it took them an inordinate amount of time to get it working properly, after sending me out of the store in the first place with an "It's all working fine!!" and then me returning an hour later with a "No it's not". Anyway, all sorted.
I then walked down to the Dunedin Museum, which was quite a great new place, with 5 floors to explore. Great natural history sections!! And a really lovely section with lots of Maori carving:
After the museum, I thought I'd wander down to the factory with the purple door to see about a tour... The purple door you say??
IT'S THE CADBURY FACTORY OMGOMGOMG
I just missed the store: literally. I tried the door at 4:30pm and it shut at 4:30pm. Oh well. I wandered up to the Info Centre, which was cleared out of cruise ship people, and decided to book a train trip for tomorrow! I'm going up the Taieri Gorge to Middlemarch. I'm excited!
